Proform 5.0 Crosstrainer Review

Proform 5.0 Crosstrainer Review

There are three basic models that proform offers for crosstrainers -- the proform 5.0 cross trainer, the 5.5 model, and a 7.0 model.  The proform 5.0 cross trainer comes in at around $600 at most retail websites.  It is the least expensive of all three models, and contains many of the same features as its two older brothers.  If you are deciding between each of these models, then you will want to read this review.

In general, I have found it is not wise to cut corners when it comes to purchasing fitness equipment.  I am a person who would rather spend $200 to get that little bit of extra comfort, durability and quietness than to try to be a cheapskate.  The problem is that you only save $200 once, but you have to deal with all the extra little imperfections for the lifetime of the fitness equipment.

That's why I would not recommend the proform 5.0 cross trainer.  Instead, I would go with the release of the 5.5 model, or perhaps the 7.0 cross trainer.

The difference is not so much in the features.  Actually, most of the features are identical.  They'll both have impact reducing cushioning technology, quick controls that allow for one-button pushing to change speed and inclination percentages, as well as heart monitors and built in workout programs.

The main difference is in construction.  While I wasn't particularly thrilled with the sturdiness of the construction of the 7.0 proform cross trainer, the 5.0 cross trainer is the weakest constructed of them all.  In fact, under a rigorous workout program of 3 1-hour sessions a week, I cannot see this cross trainer lasting for more than one to two years at most.

Even if it were to hold up, it would probably suffer the same fate as other poorly constructed pieces of the fitness equipment -- as they break down, they become less comfortable, can cause injury more easily, and are just plain louder!

While I have never performed any scientific study to confirm this, I do believe that under the same workout conditions the proform 7.0 cross trainer would last twice as long as a proform 5.0 cross trainer.  So in reality, I would contend that you are saving nothing in the long run.  While upfront you are paying less, you will be out shopping for a new cross trainer sooner.

In conclusion, I would recommend the proform 7.0 cross trainer over the proform 5.0 cross trainer.
